5 Ways to Reduce Stress
Stress is part of daily life. There are many stressors such as making a decision on which coffee drink you'd like while a long line of impatient people are waiting behind you. Then, there are big stressor such as studying for a final exam to finish out the semester strong. Either way, stress is inevitable. However, stress should never be a consistent occurrence during your ordinary day-to-day life. Excessive stress can cause: significant weight gain or weight loss, sickness, or other more serious health complications both mentally and physically. Here are 5 tips to reduce stress:
1. Exercise
Exercise releases endorphins (a feel good hormone) in the brain, thus bringing on more upbeat energy. Exercise can also release serotonin in the brain, which can have a calming effect, which can reduce stress and anxiety.
2. Get More Rest
Getting the proper amount of rest has many health benefits. Adults need at least 7-9 hours of sleep per night in order to function at moderate to maximum levels. Sleeping also helps to repair the mind and body. Getting a good night's rest helps to reduce irritability, stress, anxiety, and improve cognitive function.
3. Meditate
Meditation is a powerful tool for mind and body connectivity and wellness. Not only can it reduce stress, it can improve sleep. Meditating can bolster confidence, ease pain and decrease blood pressure. The misconception is that meditation requires a lot of time. Just 5 minutes per day before you start your day or before you go to bed can make a difference.
4. Choose Optimism
It is easy to fall into the entrapment of negative thoughts; especially, when bad things happen. Choosing the 'bright side' is simply that; a choice. Finding the good in every situation can improve your outlook on life, and improve happiness.
5. Walk Away
When the going gets too tough, walk away. You may be able to return if the situation absolutely needs attention, or needs to completed. However, walking away and returning if needed will cause you to cool down, and return with a clear mind. If it is not necessary to return, don't. The best solution for dealing with difficult situations that aren't worth the risk of escalation is to remove yourself. Your life will be so much better without the added stress.
