5 Reasons Drinking Water is Good for Your Mind, Body and Skin
We've all heard the saying of drinking 6-8 glasses of water per day keeps you hydrated. Water covers about 80 percent of the world. Without water, human life and certain other forms of life could not exist. There are many reasons why water is essential. On an atomic level, water contains hydrogen and oxygen in which we are primary made of. Here are 5 reasons why drinking water is beneficial:
1. Aids in Skin Hydration and Clarity
Skin hydration isn't just achievable by adding lotions and creams to your skin. Your skin cells need hydration both inside and out. Drinking water both brings minerals and the flow of nutrients into skin cells, and expels waste from skin cells. It also increases the production of collagen which prevents wrinkles and fine lines.
2. Awakens the Mind
Your brain needs water for proper cognitive function. When the body is dehydrated, your body can begin to pull nutrients and water from your brain cells causing confusion and cognitive dysfunction. Hydrating your body adequately can cause you to have more focus and less brain fog.
3. Flushes the Kidneys
Kidneys function as filters to your body. Water helps your kidneys excrete nutrients throughout your bloodstream and expel toxins from your body through urine. Also, water helps to expand blood vessels to provide optimal endocrine health. If the kidneys aren't properly getting rid of toxins, then it can be very toxic to your bloodstream, causing an eventual need for dialysys (a blood cleaning technique used by medical clinics) to rid toxins of the blood. In addition, if urine is consistently concentrated, it can cause the kidneys to create stones while flushing minerals through your endocrine system. Passing kidney stones can be very painful and can even cause hospitalization. Water helps to keep urine diluted to prevent kidney stones from forming.
4. Hydrates the Gastrointestinal (GI) Tract
A dehydrated gut causes many issues. It can hinder the performance of good bacteria and enzymes. Your gut produces enzymes, prebiotics, probiotics and gastric acid which aids in digestion and balance of microbes within the gut. Water helps to promote healthy bacteria, enzymic and other GI reactions. If you are dehydrated, then your body will pull moisture from the gut to hydrate other parts of the body which can lead to bloating and constipation. Drinking an adequate amount of water (6 - 8 glasses per day) can prevent these issues. Water helps to push waste through your gut, causing expulsion of waste to come with ease.
5. Reduces Stress
Drinking water can lower cortisol and blood pressure. Water balances out the stress hormone known as cortisol. Cortisol is produced by the adrenal gland. If the body is dehydrated, the adrenal glands can go into overdrive which produces excess cortisol. In addition, blood pressure can be affected by the rhythmic motion within the heart and blood flow through the arteries. Water moistens the arteries which increases dilation and allows a healthier blood flow to the heart causing proper rhythm and flow of the entire circulatory system.
Conclusion
Drinking water has plenty of benefits. A well-balanced intake of water can keep the mind, body and skin healthy. Since we are made mostly of water, it is important that the ratio of water be maintained throughout the body in order to maintain proper bodily functions.
